Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir
Eat Pray Love has sold more than six million copies since its 2006 release. Women found it inspirational and even Oprah couldn’t get enough of the book, or Gilbert, inviting the author to appear on her show twice.
It was a no-brainer that the memoir would become a movie, and casting Julia Roberts as Gilbert was an equally obvious choice. The story follows Gilbert, a thirtysomething New York writer, who suffers a breakdown after realizing she doesn’t want children and no longer loves her husband (Billy Crudup). She decides to spend a year travelling to find herself, so goes to Italy for food and fun, to India to meditate and lastly to Indonesia, where she meets, and falls in love with, Felipe (Javier Bardem).
Directed by Glee writer/producer/director Ryan Murphy, the movie was shot in all three aforementioned countries, and Roberts took her three kids in tow while filming.
Roberts decided not to meet Gilbert before she started filming. She told Women’s Wear Daily, “I didn’t want to be overly influenced. She’s such an incandescent personality.... We were a few weeks into filming when I met her and her husband, and she was exactly what I wanted her to be.”
The Other Guys
Movies about buddy cops are always in season in Hollywood, and this comedy pairs Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as two of New York’s finest. Ferrell plays paper-pushing detective Allen Gamble and Wahlberg is fiery cop Terry Hoitz, who’s been paired with Gamble ever since an embarrassing public incident involving his gun. The duo live in the shadow of the city’s coolest cops (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson) but wind up interacting with the big boys on an important case.

The Expendables
Old action stars don’t die, they just find a role in The Expendables. The 63-year-old Sylvester Stallone wrote and directed this tale about a group of mercenaries who try to take out a South American dictator. Stallone’s old timey co-stars — Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts — are joined by somewhat younger co-horts Jason Statham, Jet Li and Terry Crews. But what every ’80s action fan can’t wait to see is the much-hyped scene that unites Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger on the big screen for the very first time.
